Taking kids on business trips is becoming more of a logistical challenge, and there are some real restrictions on the types of trips that will be full-fledged family outings. The location is one of the big factors in determining if this trip is good for the whole family to enjoy. If you’re traveling to a popular destination like Orlando or California where your spouse and kids can find plenty of things to do every day, it’s a good idea to bring the family.
Other locations that make great choices for including the family are historical and memorable places like New York, New Orleans or San Francisco, or some great outdoor destinations like London, Paris or Rome. If the kids have your partner to guide their tour, traveling with you can be both an event to remember and a wonderful learning experience they will share with their grandchildren decades from now.
Obviously, the time of year for your business trip is a critical factor in whether children can attend. Summer business trips work well with the plan but if your trip will interfere with children’s school schedules, it’s usually not worth including. Now in cases where there is a significant educational benefit to the trip, there may be some concessions to be made for out-of-school children if they are to gain any valuable experience from the trip.

This is the amount of time you can spend with your family while working and traveling. It’s common knowledge that business trips often also mean your long commute and then business dinners and negotiations that can last into the night. If you are going on a trip that requires dedication to the mission, it is best not to bring your family. There is no point in participating in an exciting work outing only to find themselves never to see you until back home. They will get frustrated and you will wonder what the cost and hassle of taking them is if you can’t enjoy them except for a good night kiss in their hotel bed and goodbye in the morning.
But when all the factors are in place, taking the family on the occasional business trip can be downright boring and fun. So pay attention to your travel agenda. There may be some banquets where the family gets along well.
